Vinyl Selection: ‘Honky Château’ by Elton John
Released in 1972 as the follow up to ‘Madman Across the Water’, ‘Honky Château’ was the fifth Elton John record in three years. He was already a familiar name, but this album transformed his career from a mild singer/songwriter to a rock star that would go on to dominate the ’70s.
Whereas his previous works involved over two dozen session musicians in a recording studio, this album finally integrated his touring band. Elton John, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, and Dee Murray relocated to the Château d’Hérouville in France to record in less than a week.
The final product skyrocketed Elton John’s career and was the first of several No. 1 records throughout the decade.
Listen as Ricky Aaron takes you through the entire record and the making of in this week’s Vinyl Selection!
