Chrissie Hynde, guitarist and vocalist for The Pretenders, is born in Akron, Ohio. She now lives in London and keeps an apartment in the Highland Square neighborhood of her hometown of Akron.

Dick Clark's Michigan State Fair stage show, winding up a four day stand, attracts 15,000 spectators - it's the most in the fair's 110-year history. Appearing on stage are Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, La Vern Baker, Freddy Canon, Duane Eddy, the Coasters, Lou Rawls, and Bobby Rydell.

Curtis Mayfield's Super Fly goes gold and becomes the country's Number One album. The soundtrack LP also includes "Freddie's Dead," a #4 in October.

Elton John plays the Hollywood Bowl and is introduced by the show's emcee, porn star Linda Lovelace of Deep Throat infamy: "Here he is, the biggest, largest, most gigantic and fantastic man, the costar of my next movie....Elton John."

The president of the slumping MGM Records since 1969, Mike Curb, resigns. The 28 year old made his reputation as a purveyor of middle-of-the-road music. He once got rid of eighteen acts from his label because the were allegedly "drug oriented." Curb had other things on his mind like politics and became Lieutenant Governor of California.

Judge Richard Owen of the New York State Supreme Court rules that George Harrison "subconsciously plagiarized" "He's So Fine," the Chiffons' 1963 hit. Harrison's 1970 hit "My Sweet Lord" is the reason for the problem. Harrison is ordered to pay $587,000 to ABKCO Music, a company owned, ironically, by Harrison's former business manager (when he was one of the Beatles), Allen Klein.

Paul McCartney, who earlier purchased rights to Buddy Holly's song catalog, commemorates Holly's 40th birthday with the inauguration of "Buddy Holly Week" in the U.K.

Ex-Sex Pistol bassist Sid Vicious performs at Max's Kansas City, New York City punk club.

The Who's drummer, Keith Moon dies in London after overdosing on Hemenephirin, a prescription drug which was supposed to have helped him with alcohol. His untimely death does not mean the end of the Who. He is replaced by ex-Faces drummer Kenney Jones. Keith Moon was 31.

David Bowie and Mick Jagger's version of "Dancing In The Streets" hits #1 on the U.K. pop chart.

Despite threats from former member Roger Waters to sue promoters if the show goes on, Pink Floyd kicks off their "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" tour in Ottawa, Canada.

Hip-hop periodical Rappages magazine presents a $10,000 check to the Minority AIDS Project in memory of Eric "Eazy-E" Wright, on what would have been the rapper's 32nd birthday.


1996
Rapper Tupac Shakur and Marion "Suge" Knight are shot while riding in Knight's Mercedes in Las Vegas following a Mike Tyson fight. Shakur would die 6 days later.

Composer Niccolo Castiglioni dies at the age of 64.


1997
Derek Taylor, press officer for the Beatles for much of their career, dies at his home in Suffolk, England, at the age of 65. He had been battling cancer for several years.


2000
Rage Against The Machine bassist Timothy Commerford pleads guilty to charges of assault and disorderly conduct in a Manhattan court, and is sentenced to time served, stemming from an incident during the MTV Video Music Awards the night before. During the show, Commerford climbed a large set piece as Limp Bizkit was accepting an award, was forcibly removed from the venue by N.Y. Police, and spent the rest of the night in jail. More like Rage Against The Set.

Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, 63, is rushed to the hospital with an undisclosed stomach illness, just hours before he is due to perform in his hometown of Gorilla, Ontario. Lightfoot undergoes surgery the following day.

R&B artist Erma Franklin, who sang backup for her better-known sister Aretha, dies of cancer in Detroit. She is 64.


2003
Singer/songwriter Warren Zevon dies in Los Angeles. He is 56. Zevon was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in August of the previous year. A spokesperson for the artist says that Zevon had been feeling well of late, and died peacefully in his home.

2004
Scottish alternative rock act Franz Ferdinand wins the 2004 Nationwide Mercury Prize with its eponymous debut album. The annual music-industry award, recognizing the U.K. or Irish album of the year, is presented at the Grosvenor House hotel in Central London.


2005
Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey, and Ciara divvie up the wealth at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, taking home two trophies apiece.
