Vinyl Selection: ‘Metallica’ by Metallica
Otherwise known as ‘The Black Album’, this fifth record by Metallica saw a change in direction for the group in terms of sound. Following the success of the first four albums within the heavy metal genre, they group had become more interested in increasing their fan base. They wanted to sound more mainstream in order to reach a larger audience, all while remaining true to their thrash-metal roots.
The first step in accomplishing this was hiring mega-producer Bob Rock. Rock had previously worked with the likes of Bon Jovi and Aerosmith (along with many others), and he admittedly wasn’t a big fan of Metallica’s first four records. But the sound he was able to produce with Mötley Crüe’s ‘Dr. Feelgood’ album was exactly what Metallica was searching for.
Since, it has become one of the best selling albums of all time, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide and spending over 300 weeks on the Billboard 200.
